Angels, Gargoyles, Dragons, Oh My.

Have you ever noticed the statues around you? On a recent trip to London I started to spot all kinds of weird, mostly mythical, creatures on the buildings. I took a few snaps but am currently getting to grips with a new camera so only a few came out. Still, I rather like this one.

Who the lady is and why she is leading a winged horse I have no idea. The picture is from the The Mall, just past the Admiralty Arch and if someone can explain the importance of it and who she is I would love to know.

Likewise this gentleman.

Spotted at extremely long range was this phoenix on the river side of St Pauls. (It is there, right in the middle)

Or how about this Hyena (maybe) on the walls of the Natural History Museum.

This golden lady is, I believe, Victory from outside the front doors of Buckingham palace.

Although the Eagle is not mythical (merely endangered!) I just love this creation reminiscent of Rome, Washington, the Third Reich and Warhammer 40,000 all at once!

At this point my wife reminded me of that excellent Dr. Who episode with the weeping angels and we ran away! I am, however, going to make a point of looking up at buildings for these excellent creations, usually so unobserved.

London's skyline is dripping with this stuff... I am particularly fond of Justice (of course) and the weird unicorns and lions fighting across the spire of St George's Church Bloomsbury (a Hawksmoor creation).

I've often wondered about the economics of traditional architecture.. Nowadays its all "form and function united", whereas old gargoyles must have cost a fortune in material and labour, and on a building like St Pancras Station your talking insane amounts of money. But they kept paying and paying.
